Gresco Selected as First Participating Vendor for Alabama Colleges’ Fiber Optic Toolkits
In a press release in Alabama on August 8, 2023, Governor Kay Ivey, “Announced how more than $400 million in federal funding and over $1.4 billion from the U.S. Department of Commerce Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment Program (BEAD) will be used to expand access to high-speed internet across Alabama.” [1]
The press release included mention of a, “Demonstration from students trained at the Wallace Community College campus on how to deploy fiber optics cables.” [1] The training is developed through the Alabama Community College System’s (ACCS) Innovation Center in an effort to deliver training at no cost to participants.
Gresco has been selected as the first vendor to participate in preparing fiber optic toolkits to the community colleges in Alabama. The ACCS Innovation Center, a division of the Alabama Community College System, is providing the funds for fiber optic kits to the community colleges in Alabama so they can have the equipment available to offer the “Skills for Success” fiber course in their community as soon as possible.
According to an article from Wallace Community College, “The fiber optics training is offered at no cost to participants. The course covers best practices and fundamental principles behind basic data and voice transmission via fiber optic cable, as well as installation and termination techniques. Students learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation, and install, terminate, splice, and test multimode or single-mode fiber optic networks according to existing standards.” [2]
The aforementioned training will assist in installing high-speed internet across Alabama in their “Be Linked Alabama” campaign.
